It’s been over two weeks since mankind failed to vote for “Persephone” as a name for one of Pluto’s moons - my way of coping with the disappointment was drawing Hades’ reaction, obviously.

Seriously, fan artists are so pretentious.

I looked at the art, I liked it, I downloaded it, I decided to share it. I’m not saying I did it, it’s quite obvious it wasn’t me, otherwise I’d say it.

But NOES, that’s not good enough, we have to put the source or they get pouty.

Bitch, I have better things to do than to go through my browser history just to please you.

When you start paying the company that OWNS the rights to the characters to work on them, I’ll start breaking a sweat to find the source.

you’ve probably never created art before? have you ever drawn a picture for your favorite series because you love it so much? putting the source is showing appreciation and respect for the person who created the art that you like looking at. it’s not a matter of who owns the characters, it’s a matter of the artist getting recognition. if somebody posted something i drew without crediting me, it would discourage me from posting more online.

if you don’t source art you don’t deserve to look at it

When are people going to understand that art doesn’t grow on trees? Believe it or not artists don’t always make things so you can rip it off of google images and share it with the world

You can’t claim to like art if you can’t respect the people who make it, because without them it could not even exist

    Can anyone say pretentious douchebag?

As an artist I can pretty much tell you that my drawings are like a child and having people like you stealing it left and right is utterly soul crushing. Sit and the corner and think about what you’ve said because there is really no excuse for this level of ignorance.

The green avatars represent the green-screen, a key tool in visual effects moviemaking.

Changing your avatar to a green-screen represents solidarity with the computer graphics industry which is currently being plagued by bankruptcy and layoffs (like what happened to me last week ORZ…): Digital Domain, Sony Entertainment, DreamWorks Animation, Pixomondo, Zynga, and more.

The “greenscreen movement” is largely prompted by bankruptcy of Rhythm and Hues, the company responsible for two Oscar-nominated movies this year: Snow White and the Huntsman and Life of Pi. Just weeks before the ceremonies, much of their staff (the people that made those movie!) got laid off - many of those workers picketed outside the Academy on Oscar’s night.  Insult was added to injury when Life of Pi won an Oscar for ‘Best Visual Effects’ and the winner’s acceptance speech was cut short as soon as he mentioned the financial issues at R&H (it may not have been intentional, but it still read terribly!).

VFX is highly competitive.  When a studio wants to make a movie, VFX houses name a price they can do the work for.  Obviously, studios want lower prices and faster work, so VFX houses frequently under-bid each other and ask for unreasonable workdays.  Studios thus get more demanding and drive prices into unsustainable territories.  In addition, some areas provide subsidies for local VFX work - up to 30%! - meaning studios only have to pay for 70% of the movie.  Taxpayers cover the rest.  So globally, it’s an uneven playing field.  California doesn’t give subsidies, so established Hollywood houses are losing bids that were already too low to begin with.  This Reddit post does an amazing job explaining the situation.

While layoffs are familiar in project-based industry, this is a LOT in just a few months, and it brings an unhealthy business model to public light.  I encourage you - if you want to work in this field or simply enjoy VFX movies - to research and appreciate the work that goes into them - and maybe we can collectively hope for change.

Guys this is really important; this is my industry. Digital Domain used to be down the road from where I work, and Rhythm and Hues was right near my train station.

    Used to be.

    Was.

Nowadays, all people care about is the end product. They don’t stop to think about the hours of labor and tireless revising that goes into the life-like animations on screen. The 3D industry has enabled us to progress with leaps and bounds in film, bringing epics like Spiderman to life without the risk of stunt doubles being placed in precarious situations just for a shot or sequence.

    The Avengers.

    The Hobbit.

All the big-name movies are created by hard working individuals who spend up to 16 hours a day in front of a computer to get this stuff on the big screen. When they get laid off, they aren’t receiving compensation for their time. They have bills, they have families; they are no different than any other working person.

So why does the media keep sweeping them under the rug?
